Optical Characterisation and Radial Velocity Monitoring with Belgian and Indian Telescopes

Abstract

Two catalogues of exoplanet and eclipsing binary candidates were published by Barros et al. (2016, A&A, 594, A100) and Vanderburg et al. (2016, ApJS, 222, 14). They were detected from the Kepler archival data. Out of these, we selected a sample of objects for a detailed follow-up study to ascertain their precise nature.

For the project "Optical Characterization and Radial Velocity Monitoring with Belgian and Indian Telescopes" (ORBIT), we aim to use high-resolution spectra gathered with HERMES@Mercator (1.2-m La Palma, Spain) and HESP@HCT (2-m Hanle, India) in combination with photometric observations from small- and medium-sized telescopes at Devasthal Observatory (ARIES, Nainital, India) for radial velocity monitoring and to determine accurate values for their physical parameters.

The study of a sufficiently large sample of such candidates will enable us to make a large contribution on:

  1. Detection and characterisation of exoplanets (by determining accurate physical parameters through constraining the orbital inclination).
  2. Alleviation of the mass-radius problem of low-mass stars (by significantly increasing the number of low-mass eclipsing binaries with accurate masses, radii, and metallicities).
